Home Remedies for Hiccups

Quiet the Hiccups, Naturally.

Seriously, Hiccups?

Hiccups are sudden spasms of the diaphragm that push out those weird little sounds. They pop up after eating too fast, drinking something fizzy, or even laughing hard.

While they’re not usually serious, they can be pretty irritating,  but the good news is, they can be treated with simple natural remedies at home.

How to use home remedies to treat Hiccups?

  • Drink Water (The Tricky Way): Sip water from the far side of a glass — it sounds odd, but it often works!

  • Lemon: Suck on a slice of lemon; the sharp taste can help reset your breathing rhythm.

  • Hold Your Breath: The most common remedy, hold your breath for 5 to 6 seconds, then release it slowly.

  • Sugar: Swallow a teaspoon of granulated sugar (not recommended for those with diabetes).

  • Yoghurt: A spoonful of plain yoghurt can help calm the diaphragm.

  • Gargle with Water: Gargling cold water may help interrupt the hiccup reflex.

  • Peanut Butter: If you’re not allergic, a spoonful of peanut butter can do the trick, the sticky texture forces a change in breathing and swallowing patterns.

  • Mind Your Eating Habits: Eating too quickly or gulping down water can trigger hiccups. Try eating slower, sipping water rather than gulping, and be mindful of foods like spicy dishes that may irritate your diaphragm.
